Eratosthenes
An Alexandrian scholar remembered for turning two shadows into a calculation of Earth’s size. His own account is lost; the later writer Cleomedes describes a method using the difference in solar altitude at Syene and Alexandria and an estimated distance between them. The result is reported as 250,000 or 252,000 stadia, but uncertainty about the stadion and the geographical assumptions prevents a single trustworthy modern error percentage. The geometric idea remains elegant and reproducible. The sieve bearing his name, along with his work on chronology and geography, shows a much wider range. The nickname Beta and the story that he fasted after losing his sight belong to later tradition.
Adrien-Marie Legendre
One side of a priority dispute in which publication and claimed earlier use were not the same thing. Legendre first published the method of least squares in 1805. Gauss presented it with a probabilistic treatment in 1809 and claimed to have used it since 1795. The record is clearer when those two facts are kept separate. Legendre also made long-lasting contributions to number theory, Legendre polynomials, elliptic integrals, geodesy, and metric surveying. A portrait long reproduced as his was actually the politician Louis Legendre; in 2005 a caricature in an album from around 1820 was identified as a rare image of the mathematician. The episode is a lesson in source identification, not the unveiling of one definitive face.
Charles Hermite
A profoundly modest French mathematician who, despite a lifelong limp from a clubfoot, refused all academic limelight while quietly reshaping analysis. In 1858 he expressed the general quintic through elliptic modular functions, moving beyond the universal formula by arithmetic and radicals that Abel had proved impossible. In 1873 he proved e is transcendental, and Lindemann adapted the method nine years later to settle π and close the 2,000-year squaring-the-circle problem. His name persists in Hermitian matrices, Hermite polynomials, and Hermite forms. He taught Poincaré.
Alain Connes
An architect of noncommutative geometry, which reads a “space” that cannot be drawn as points through its algebra of operations. Ordinary functions on a space satisfy fg = gf, whereas operators in quantum mechanics may change when their order is reversed. Connes developed a program treating such noncommutative algebras like coordinate algebras and recovering analogues of distance, differentiation, and integration. In the 1970s he used modular flow from Tomita–Takesaki theory to make decisive contributions to the structure and classification of type III von Neumann factors. Calling this one complete classification of every type III factor would erase later hypotheses and collaborations. This and other work in operator algebras earned the 1982 Fields Medal; he became a professor at the Collège de France in 1984. Applications to the Standard Model, number theory, the Riemann hypothesis, and the Connes–Rovelli thermal-time hypothesis are powerful research programs, not an established unified theory or a proof of the Riemann hypothesis.
Terence Tao
A mathematician whose collaborative work shows how techniques can move from one field into another. Tao won IMO bronze in 1986, silver in 1987, and gold in 1988, setting the youngest-gold record. Rather than making embellished childhood anecdotes explain his work, follow the research after his 1996 Princeton doctorate across harmonic analysis, partial differential equations, combinatorics, and analytic number theory. With Ben Green he proved that the primes contain arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions, and collaborations have ranged through compressed sensing, nonlinear Schrödinger equations, and structure versus randomness in sequences. His official 2006 Fields Medal citation likewise emphasized achievements joining several areas. His blog and Polymath work expose conjectures, failed routes, and partial progress as part of how mathematics grows collectively.
